The Peer Assisted Liaison (PAL) program is a peer-based service that offers support services to members who are diagnosed with mental health, substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders.
Certified Recovery Peer Specialists are adults who are in recovery themselves that have completed the necessary requirements in regards to experience, training, and testing in order to qualify for certification with the State of Florida Certification Board. Peer specialists play a unique and valuable role in supporting the recovery of their peers. Due to their life experience, peer specialists have the expertise that professional training cannot replicate.
PAL is an interactive program that focuses on ongoing, self-determined, recovery. Peer support is based on relationships in which each person is considered equal. The right of an individual to make their own choices and decisions regarding recovery is highly respected. Peer support is focused on health and recovery rather than on illness and disability.
PAL offers members help with identifying resources and offer referrals to services that include but are not limited to: psychiatric, mental health counseling, medical, dental, optometry, SSI and SSDI representation, public transportation services, and support groups.
PAL also provides support by offering to attend any office visits or support groups with members, and assist members on how to advocate for themselves during these visits.
PAL collaborates with family members and guardians to reach member driven goals.
PAL helps members reconnect with a healthy social network and provides education about mental health to develop skills that promote recovery.
What PAL aims to achieve for members:
• Significantly more time spent in the community
• Reduced inpatient service use
• Improved relationship with providers
• Improved sense of empowerment and recovery
By attending the PAL groups I have improved my focus, and my ability to identify with others. When meeting one on one with my PAL, I have accomplished problem-solving skills. It has helped me by eliminating fear and replacing it with a solution. I am now taking personal responsibility in my life, and setting healthy boundaries. I am full of gratitude and hope because of the PAL program, and I enjoy life moment by moment.
These services are Sarasota County-wide with specialists working in both north and south county. To learn more about PAL please contact Tim Bisson at firstname.lastname@example.org
